Dog Food ( hypoallergenic )

Hypoallergenic Food for your Dog

Grain free dog food has become a popular choice for canine owners over the last several years. So why would dog owners want to buy grain free food products? This is certainly a legitimate question. There are several answers to this question though.

The biggest reason that people have moved towards grain free dog food has to do with health concerns for their pet. Some dogs, certainly not all, have more sensitive stomachs and digestive tracks which make eating and digesting grains more difficult. Some canines are allergic to certain food items including grains and ingredients such as wheat, soy and corn. All three of these ingredients are very common in normal dog food.

Allergies in puppies and dogs are pretty common, and these ingredients are some of the ones that are more common. Most dog owners do not immediately buy grain free dog food, but if their current dog or a previous one had suffered from food allergies in the past it is certainly an option they will consider.  Symptoms of food allergies in dogs can inclu

de snoring, skin irritations, generally itchiness and more.

Another reason why owners like grain free dog food is simply because they are trying to match their dog’s diet to what it would be in the wild. If a dog was not a pet but a stray or lived in a different habitat the dog would search for meat for most of their meals. When given a choice a dog would not choice grains or vegetables to fill themselves up. Having dog food that has a higher count of grains than meat can take the essential protein a dog needs right out of their diet.

Another reason is because the grains are not there to help with the diet or to control the amount of meat and protein taken in, but they are there in order to make the product cheaper creating filler. Although most people understand the need to control costs, it should not come at the expense of their

pets. If the grain is there for this reason, why would any owner want to choose this for their dog’s diet?

If you have an older dog, over the age of 5, it is a good idea to consider this change now. Regardless of any allergies that they might have or not, once a dog gets to this age range it becomes more difficult to digest grains.

If you do decide to switch it is important to note that without the filler ingredients you will be paying more money for the dog food. You will have to weigh the extra cost to the health benefits to see how important this is for you.

Before making any decisions it would be wise to consult with your vet. Find out what they think in relation to your specific dog in question. The vet will be able to give you a better professional analysis of why this might benefit your dog, including a more complete list of all the potential health benefits and if there are any downsides to making this change.
